Protect your skin better than ever before with the latest generation of SPF products.

Lightweight, non-greasy, non-streaky and pumped full of ingredients that not only protect your skin from the sun’s rays but also restore it, the latest generation of SPF products offer more bang for the buck than ever before. Here’s a roundup of the hottest products on our shelves at the moment.

LANEIGE Sun Block Supreme SPF 50+ PA+++

LANEIGE Sun Block Supreme SPF 50+ PA+++
Water and sweat-resistant, this lightly moisturising sunscreen with a high UV protection index is perfect for outdoor activities. It also contains sebum-absorbing powder to keep skin matte and herbal water to help skin recover from sun exposure. Good for all skin types.

The Body Shop Skin Defence Multi-Protection Essence SPF 50PA++++
Developed for sensitive skin, this lightweight milk-to-water essence creates a non-greasy invisible film that moisturises and protects skin from multiple aggressors. Vitamin C and red algae extract help prevent dullness.

The Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture-Protect Emulsion SPF 30PA+++
This recent addition to The Body Shop’s very iconic Vitamin E range is a light and non-greasy essence that helps prepare and activate skin for enhanced moisture and sun protection. Star ingredients include naturally-derived hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C and wheatgerm oil.

GoodSkin Labs A-B-C Cream 8H Skin Protector SPF 30UVA/UVB
This multi-functional product combines a colour corrector, a moisturiser and a sunscreen in one product. Includes Vitamin E, sodium hyaluronate and an antioxidant cocktail to protect skin from premature aging and urban pollution while correcting uneven and dull complexions.

BRTC Aqua Rush Water Drop BB Cream SPF 28PA++
Hailing from Korea, this BB cream hydrates, conceals, brightens and protects your skin from the sun. Including macadamia seed oil to soften the skin, this product is also waterproof and helps relieve skin sensitivity.

Danahan Silky Radiance BB Cream SPF 30PA++
Also from South Korea, this sunscreen features a nature-inspired range of ingredients including fermented ginseng flower, white lotus, primrose and hwejeom extract for a bright and clear skin tone as well as wild honey for moisture.

Hadatuko UV Cut Face & Body Spray SPF 50PA++++
Refreshing, light and non-greasy, this Japanese sunscreen is enriched with ingredients (such as Jabara citrus peel essence and Satsuma mandarin peel extract) that are rich in antioxidants and supply the skin with hydration and nutrition. The convenient spray design is also a plus as it is easy to apply on even the hardest-to-reach areas of the body.

The Body Shop Wild Rose Hand Cream SPF 15
Let’s not forget that the hands are just as exposed to the sun as the face and need just as much protection. This daily hand cream with rosehip oil provides much needed moisture for dry skin and helps reduce the appearance of sunspots.

Conventional broad-spectrum sunscreens work by combining organic and inorganic ingredients such as zinc oxide, titanium oxide and oxybenzone. These ingredients protect the skin by forming a very thin but effective physical barrier that stops UV rays from reaching the skin. The latest generation of SPF products adds antioxidants to this mix.

These antioxidants — which have long been added to facial creams and serums — boost a sunscreen’s ability to protect the skin from the sun.

As Dr Patricia Wexler, a dermatological surgeon, told Bloomberg News: “Adding antioxidants to the formulation increases the stability [of the sunscreen] in the sun” and lengthens the amount of time one can spend outdoors by neutralising the sun’s rays before they can begin to damage our skin cells.

What does it all mean? Here’s our guide to deciphering cryptic sunscreen labels.

UVA/UVB: This stands for ultraviolet A radiation (UVA) and ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) rays from the sun. UVA penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB and is the main culprit when it comes to wrinkles, sagging and other signs of photo-aging. UVB rays damage the skin’s upper layers and cause sunburn. Both types of rays are linked to skin cancer.

Broad Spectrum: This means the sunscreen can protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.

SPF: The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a measure of how long a person can stay in the sun before UVB rays start to burn the skin. Let’s say with no sunscreen, your skin starts to redden in 20 minutes. A sunscreen with SPF 30 will (theoretically) allow you to stay in the sun 30 times longer without getting burned.

PA: Up till recently, most sunscreens only stated their SPF rating (a measurement of the protection a sunscreen offers against UVB rays only). The PA rating is a relatively new measurement which rates the level of protection a sunscreen offers against UVA rays. PA rankings are listed as PA+, PA++ or PA+++. The more plus symbols the label has, the more protection you get.
