School holidays are coming up and it’s time to find activities to keep your kids occupied! While outdoor activities always sound fun, why not shake things up and get the kids in on some DIY fun at home? So here’s an idea – make some pancake food art!
Involving your kids in the kitchen is a great way to spend quality time with them. It’s fun and helps you bond as a family, plus it will make you look like a hero when you help them solve their cooking dilemmas! Having your kids make their own food is also key to getting them to eat better and healthier. When they know how to whip up their own meal, they become more aware of food that’s not only good for them but tastes delicious, too.
What’s great about this activity is that it’s simple enough for kiddies to do. You can even step it up a notch and teach them how to turn their pancakes into art! No matter how their pancake food art turns out, what’s important is that you’re bringing out their creativity and letting them have fun while doing it.
Make your own pancake!
Pancakes are the perfect meal for kids as they are simple to make and easy on the palate. For the base, you can use your favorite instant pancake mix – simply add egg, oil and milk and voila! You’ve got yourself a quick meal. Or if you are adventurous, you can make it from scratch, using this simple recipe.
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 3 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon white sugar
- 1 ¼ cups milk
- 1 egg
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted
- In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.
- Make a well in the centre and pour in the milk, egg and melted butter.
- Mix all the ingredients together until you come up with a smooth batter.
- Heat a lightly oiled frying pan or a non-stick pan over medium heat.
- Pour a portion of the batter onto the pan. Once bubbles start to form, turn the pancake over and cook until the pancake turns a light brown.
To make things more interesting, you can try using food coloring with the pancake mix. Simply apportion the batter depending on how many different colors you want to use. Mix the food coloring in and place each batter into the piping bags before heating up the pancake. With the use of piping bags, you can create many different shapes!
Get creative and top it off!
Once the pancakes are cooked, the kids can get busy decorating them with toppings. You can prepare healthy toppings using their favorite fruits, or even chocolates, candies and other yummy treats. The best part about this activity is that they can come up with fun themes and things to decorate their pancake. Let their imagination run wild!
Here are some suggestions for toppings – feel free to come up with your own list!
- White chocolates
- Dried fruits
You can mix and match these ingredients to come up with a variety of colourful and delicious creations! Check out what we’ve done below.
Do remember that safety should always be observed in the kitchen, especially when cooking with children. You can do most of the cooking and leave the decorating to your kids. However, if you want them to have a hand with the cooking, make sure that they have proper gear like aprons and cooking mitts, and that they are always under your supervision.
So there you have it, we hope this has inspired you to bring out your kid’s inner Pancake Picasso! As with any fun activity, it doesn’t matter if their creations are perfect or not. What’s important is that your kids get to enjoy this activity with you, and they get creative and productive while on vacation!
